The first round of games was played tonight.

Two games were postponed, and two games were awarded after one of the players failed to appear within 30 minutes of 8:00pm.

Russell managed to achieve three passed pawns for the loss of a bishop. With a rook each and two bishops against one, Jim skilfully positioned his pieces in the endgame to achieve a clear advantage in the end. After the game Russell said wistfully of his three passed pawns: ‘they were a winning advantage, but I didn’t know how to use them’.

Joe was up the exchange but the game was still close due to Greg’s careful play to exploit minor weaknesses. In the end Joe succumbed to time pressure and allowed his remaining rooks to fall into a fatal trap.

Marcus won the battle of youth over experience to win in a game that John might have done better if there had been Flood cup time controls. The ending was sharp and despite being the exchange down John still had chances in a sharp ending.
