Four games were played tonight, with the upset of the round going to Jim Petrie who achieved one of his best wins at the club. After the game Ray said that the endgame just did not fall his way, and Jim who is a tricky opponent at the best of times, was able to exploit his advantage.

John Ryland played a fatal move with his rook at move 14. The capturing knight eventually escaped and with a piece advantage black achieved checkmate at move 23.

Gary Sands felt he had a few outside chances of remaining in the game against Tony Howes, but always seemed to be a move behind, and Tony eventually won.

This win

Brian Willcock managed to reach a knight and 7 pawn endgame against John Roper in which he had cleverly set up a silo of three of John’s pawns on the ‘f’ file. But somehow after the knights were exchanged Brian was not able to penetrate further with his king, and a draw ensued. Brian seemed quite stumped as to how victory had evaded his grasp.

Quote of the night

‘That A League grand final must have been a boring game. A draw then a penalty shoot-out. Yawn..’ – Someone who was obviously not in the country at the time.
