Report – 19 November 2010

Allegro Tournament

Results (Week 8):

Kieran Lyons 1 Jim Petrie 1

Andrew Robinson 1 Jonathan Wilson 0 (one game only played, Andrew white)

Kieran Lyons 1 Jonathan Wilson 1

Kieran unexpectedly lost two games, one each against Jim and Jon, and both on time.

Against Jim, she lost the first game with a forced mate in sight, but DGT out of sight.

Kieran won the first game against Jon by a huge margin, like a grandmaster playing a beginner.

In the second game Jon was far more resolute and an early pawn advantage to Jon ate away at Kieran’s time.

During the middle game Jon had a few misjudgements that allowed Kieran to claw an advantage.

Entering the endgame Jon was still only a knight down in a queen endgame, when Kieran trying for a clever mate lost on time.

45 Minute Tournament

Results (Week 2):

Jim Petrie 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Jonathan Wilson 0 Tony Howes 1

Greg Colwell 0 Tony Howes 1

Andrew gave away a knight for free within the first 10 moves.

With two rooks each and Jim with an extra bishop Andrew offered a draw which was rejected.

Then Andrew managed to capture the bishop after an oversight by Jim.

More aggressive endgame play saw Andrew gain a few pawns with the remaining rook, and then the game.
