Allegro Tournament

Results (Week 4):

Jim Petrie 1.5 Tony Howes 0.5

Andrew Robinson 1 Nathan Shaw 1 (2 draws)

Tony Howes 2 Brian Willcock 0

Nathan Shaw 1 Brian Willcock 1

The slow start to this tournament continued with just four sets of game played tonight.

Jim showed that he is no pushover at the faster time controls.

He achieving a agreed draw in an even position in the first game, then won the second.

The first game saw Andrew playing white and opened up early on.

However Nathan failed to capitalise on his early advantage and a draw was agreed with a very even endgame looming.

In the second game Nathan had doubled pawn on the e file which assisted his kingside attack.

Andrew defended against this and launched a counter against Nathan’s queenside castled king.

With two rooks and two minor pieces remaining, Andrew achieved a pawn advantage.

However a badly positioned bishop meant no way forward and another draw was agreed.

Brian blundered a queen in the first game, then played more solidly in the second, but Tony still came away with the points.

Nathan won the first game with Brian.

The second game reached a bishop endgame with Nathan a pawn up.

Despite this Brian had set up his pawn structure well and a draw seemed likely.

A strategic miscalculation by Nathan allowed Brian to force Nathan to lose his bishop for a pawn, which decided the game.
