Report – 15 October 2010

Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results:

Jim Petrie 0 Tony Howes 1 (Round 7)

The two remaining issues of grand importance to be sorted out in this tournament were resolved with the single game played tonight.

Tony’s win means that he achieves third place and a podium finish (the Delhi Commonwealth Games over now, but not forgotten).

Jim’s loss confirms that Russell Lyons indeed has won the Maiden Trophy for 2010, his first chess trophy.

The few remaining games can still be played in coming weeks, as the tournament will be sent to the CAQ for rating during November.

Allegro Tournament

Results (Week 3):

Jonathan Wilson 2 James Hiller 0

Andrew Robinson 2 Brian Willcock 0

Nathan Shaw 2 James Hiller 0

James Hiller 1 Brian Willcock 1

Nathan Shaw 2 Jonathan Wilson 0

Jon overwhelmed James in both games to post his first victories in tournament chess at The Gap.

Further instruction from Gary Sands should see further improvement, so everyone…  watch out!

James also received a few tips from Nathan about playing constructively with white, and this resulted in a surprise victory in the first game.

Brian of course contributed generously to James’ cause with the donation of a queen among other free gifts.

James continued the hoodoo he has on Brian, last year achieving a win and a draw in this same tournament.

Brian had earlier played far more solidly against Andrew.

The first game started with Andrew white and d4 d5 c4 c5 then an early swap off of pieces.

The crucial part of the game saw all pieces attacking of protecting a square occupied by Brian’s bishop and it was a case of who would blink first. Brian did and lost a piece and the game.

The second game saw Andrew with a very strong kingside attack, and when he could not nail a checkmate exchanged a knight for Brian’s rook in time trouble, which was enough for a close win.

Jon played strongly against Nathan in the first game, building up pressure rather than exchanging. However a miscalculation lost a bishop and the game.

The second game was decided when Jon blundered a rook early on to a cunningly placed bishop.

Quote of the night

Nathan dominated tonight, even surpassing James in quotes,

“I haven’t been here for so long, my guard is down.”
