Six games played tonight.

First game to finish was Mitchell against Gary when Mitchell overlooked the killer blow. Soon after James suddenly lost to Joe after gaining a full rook advantage and a time advantage with Joe often neglecting to hit the clock. Unfortunately for James he overlooked a variation on the back row mate and succumbed to a check that Joe did not initially realise was checkmate. Final position:

    White (James)  Kd1 Rh1 Rd2 Bc5 c2 f2 g3 h2

    Black (Joe)    Ke8 Ra1 Bc4 a7 c7 e5 f5 g7 h7

Kieran gained a small amount of revenge for her first round Flood Cup loss to Brian, withstanding the pre-match jocularity from those playing at the next table (who were the last to finish their game). In other games Ray maintained his 100% record against Jim while Greg suffered the effects of several consecutive 3:30am shifts contributing to his loss to Russell.

The last game to finish is presented below in full. Nathan felt that his downfall commenced at move 22 when he moved his king to unnecessarily make room for his knight to move away from the edge of the board at a2. Nathan was under five minutes from move 32 and under one minute from move 44. While Andrew dropped below five minutes at move 41 he was never seriously in time trouble. The cramping of white’s position with black’s 23rd move led contributed significantly to the final outcome.
