Flood Cup

Tonight was the first night where all games were played under the new time controls of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move.

During the week the following proposal was put to all players who have entered tournaments this year:

Background

The alarms at the school are set for 11:30pm on Friday nights. It is therefore desirable that games finish within three hours. This is to allow that some games may start slightly after 8pm, and to clean up and lock up after all games are finished. I think everyone agrees that having adjournments is not a good idea. Also, we do not want to damage our good relations with The Gap State High School, who must pay a fee every time the Security Guard is summoned when the alarms go off.

Proposal

The time controls for the 2010 Flood Cup be amended to 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move increment.

(Note: For a 60 move game this means each player will have 90 minutes each, therefore finishing the game within three hours. It is very rare for games to go beyond 60 moves and for each player to have used all of their time.)

Outcome of the vote: 12 votes for, 1 vote against.

Results:

James Hiller 0 Ray Adams 1

Brian Willcock 0 Cameron De Vere 1

Nathan Shaw 1 Jim Petrie 0

Andrew Robinson 0 Kieran Lyons 1

Gary Sands 1 Russell Lyons 0

Tony Howes ½ point BYE

All games went to form with reigning Flood Cup champion Ray Adams the only player with a perfect record after two rounds.

Cameron’s report on his game:

The game started with Brian conceding a poor pawn structure in return for better development and pressure. Cameron slowly developed his pieces to control Brian’s initiative. Cameron gained one of the weak pawns on move 11, though Brian seemed to have a significant attack and the bishop pair. Cameron played the prepared 13... Ne4 hitting Brian’s bishop with time which freed his pieces and attacked Brian’s King instead. Brian resign on move 17 to a 3 move combination from Cameron winning Brian’s rook for free to a knight fork of king and rook.
