Brian:

I beat Kieran. She swallowed a highly toxic pawn and as a consequence gained a Bishop in losing her Queen and, essentially, the game. Not for publication: I have instructed my Legal Adviser to examine your libellous comments re my chess abilities…. <Editor: SNIP SNIP>

Cameron:

There was an alarm problem. Apparently the school has put in an 11.30 alarm deadline. The security guard let us stay, though you'll need to follow this up. …... my game was a very slow game lasting just 40 moves with both of us having under 10 minutes.

Nathan:

Cameron-Nathan: Cameron and I had a tight tussle that ended with a repetition draw at about 12:15am with only Gary and Ray remaining as spectators. In the final position I seemed to have the advantage with an extra pawn and a better placed rook, but since there were plenty of demons left in the position and I was tiring quickly from an early start that morning I claimed the draw (with Cameron's assistance as to the correct point at which to claim it). The game was a London with an early c5 in response, and Cameron's early Nb5 threatening to fork on c7 controlled the run of play for most of the game, generating a lot of pressure that I only just managed to squeeze out of for a slightly better game in the final position.

Brian and Kieran: From the couple of times I had a look (including at what I gather was the critical point) Kieran was attacking Brian's king early and overlooked Brian's bishop skewer of her queen and king, so Kieran lost a queen for bishop and the momentum of her attack. Not sure what happened after that on the board, but I assume that since Brian won he must have broken from tradition and not given the queen back.

Russell/Tony, Ray/Gary: I only glanced at these games at a couple of early points and there was no winning advantage in either game at the time, although in both cases the lower rated player had a time advantage.

There was an interesting point just after midnight when the security alarm went off and summoned a security guard. After Ray's suggestion of a sealed move and adjournment was soundly knocked down, he managed to save the day by disarming the alarm and sweet talking the guard, who allowed us to stay. The guard this time was a little more reasonable in his application of the rules than his colleague from the episode last year.

Ray:

Cameron De Vere and Nathan Shaw finished with a draw at about 12:30 am.

Brian Willcock won against Kieran Lyons. He is surely become her nemesis!

Ray Adams won against Gary Sands at about 11:30 pm. Ray Adams also used much more time on the clock. Gary played 1.........e6 as black to my d4. You get no prize for guessing what I played for move 2. Needless to say, it went to a French Classical in which at move 6, I played h4, instead of immediately exchanging bishops. However him, being more sensible than I was at his age, didn't accept the pawn sacrifice an incur a raging King side attack. He played h6 instead, at which I then had to exchange bishops. At least he was left with the poorer one. However after castling long, throughout the middle game I was able to maintain King side pressure and gradually convert positional superiority and tactical threats into mating threats and material gain.
