45 Minute tournament (2009)

Results:

Cameron De Vere ½ Andrew Robinson ½

Five people in attendance tonight on a another quiet night at the beginning of the year for the club. Ray Adams and Barry Cox played several clock-less games and reminisced on the 1980s chess scene.

Greg also came along and played a few social games at the end, thus ending his unbeaten run for 2010 (he said he hadn’t played chess since November).

Andrew survived a lot of pressure in his game with Cameron. For most of the game his pieces were tied down with Cameron having many options for attack, but Andrew always somehow conjuring a defence. With no increments, time became a serious issue for both players as the game evened out towards the endgame. Then with just over two minutes left for each player, Cameron made an illegal move gifting an extra two minutes to his opponent. From here with a rook and three pawns each it should have been a draw, but Andrew gifted a pawn to Cameron with thoughtless play, but then attacked Cameron’s king with relentless checks as Cameron slipped below one minute. This forced Cameron’s king away from shepherding his last pawn to promotion and led to an exchange of the last pawns. A draw was reached with Andrew happily exchanging the rooks with Cameron having 7 seconds left, as a draw was all that was required to achieve an unassailable lead in the tournament.
