Five sets of matches were played tonight after the school’s alarm system was successfully negotiated.

Gary was well pleased with his night picking up a win and a draw against players in the top half of the draw.

The biggest upset was reserved for Brian with James showing there will be no free points to be obtained in this tournament with his veni, vidi, vici assault on Brian.

James’ win in the second game must have been astonishing as by his own account he marched his rook down a diagonal!

Brian’s report:

O.K. I played badly in the first game but thanks to his missing a powerful move because it involved a pin I got a draw. In the second I outplayed him until he got a back rank mate.

James’ report:

In the first game Brian tried to do a quick kill  by a couple of his famous sacs  but find himself  in a perilous position which I was not confident enough to take advantage of.

As the game was going no further Brian offered a draw and I accepted.

In the second game which was even stranger Brian seemed to have the advantage the whole game as we steadily exchanged off pieces.

Unfortunately for him when he tried to checkmate me in the endgame he left a diagonal file exposed. I marched my rook down and checkmated him. Game set & match or as I later commentated "veni veni vinci". It is a Latin phrase.
