Stuart Wilson Trophy

Round 6 results:

Brian Willcock 1 Garvin Gray 0

Gary Sands 0 Cameron De Vere 1

Tony Howes ½ Nathan Shaw ½

Andrew Robinson ½ Ray Adams ½

Kieran Lyons v Russell Lyons – postponed

Greg Colwell BYE

Round 11 result:

Greg Colwell 0 Kieran Lyons 1

Tony’s chances of winning a third consecutive SW Trophy were dealt a further blow when held to a draw by Nathan. In fact, Nathan felt he missed a few chances to win the game.

Cameron and Kieran continued on their winning ways, while Ray could have done likewise but failed to make the most of a queen versus two connected pawn endgame.

Brian’s report on his game with Garvin:

I arrived at the board about a minute late and appreciated the fact that sportingly Garvin had not started the clock. The game soon opened up new fields of chess theory – alas destined to remain uncharted as I soon got lost in my attempts to record the moves. I was able to cobble together a defence against my opponent’s King’s side attack, somehow survive the terror of his fianchettoed Bishop, and open up his Queen’s side when he had castled long. The attack on his exposed King led to an end game where both of us had a Rook and pawns. However he had one passed pawn in the centre while I had united passed pawns on the wing. I was able to neutralize the thrust of his pawn while advancing my pair to the seventh, at which point Garvin conceded the game.

Garvin subsequently withdrew from the tournament. As he had completed less than 50% of his games (4 from 10) results of his games have been removed from the tournament cross-table.
