Flood Cup

Results:

Kieran Lyons 1 Mark Taylor 0 (Round 6)

James Hiller 0 Brian Willcock 1 (Round 9)

Kieran won and Mark lost, so that the destination of both the Flood Cup and the Handicap Trophy will take at least another week to decide. Kieran needs to win next week against Andrew to force a single game play-off for the Flood Cup with Ray. Mark can win the Handicap Trophy by avoiding defeat against the only player who can catch him, Gary Sands.

Brian defeated James in the other game…

Brian’s version of events:

I beat James, as you observe quite against the Indian bookmakers’ results of the tournament (into which I think the committee should inquire). James lost because early on he allowed, almost beseeched, me to pin his Queen against his King. The loss of his Queen for a Rook with his King caught in the centre demoralised him and his pieces were picked off until he finally resigned.

James’ version of events:

We had a good opening -and then on about the 10th move my Queen was pinned by his rook and I lost the Queen. Mercifully, a checkmate ensued about 8 moves later. It was a lesson that castling is a good idea against Brian. I had a moral victory against him in a friendly later on...
