Flood Cup

Round 7 results:

Nathan Shaw 1 Brian Willcock 0

Greg Colwell 0 Russell Lyons 1

Ray Adams ½ Kieran Lyons ½

Nathan’s report:

The Shaw-Willcock match… was entitled 'how to give away your extremely good rook for a terrible bishop 101'. I began with the psychological tactic of setting the board up reversed (i.e. white on the 8th row), which was discovered and let go on about move 5. You might have gathered I 'won' the exchange and a couple of pawns, which proved to be too much in the end. Brian had some counterplay for a while, until he was forced to exchange his remaining knight for 2 pawns, then resigned. Post-game analysis with Kieran revealed that Brian was concerned for my chess future after my loss last week and, being one of the elder statesmen of the club, allowed me the early advantage in the game. Inspired by Brian's generosity, I allowed Kieran to win a couple of blitz games afterwards.

Kieran and Ray drew. This was after the conclusion of the Nathan-Brian game (which was first to finish), but had less moves under the belt. It was an agreed draw and I didn't see the final position, but a couple of moves earlier there seemed to still be some room for mistakes by either side.

I think Greg was unable to repeat last week's heroics and Russell took the point. Didn't see much of the game, but it was the last to finish.

Greg’s report:

A reasonably even match but when the opportunity to be aggressive came I missed the move and gave the momentum back to Russell who finished me off well. We were the last to finish ....
