Flood Cup

Results:

Kieran Lyons 1 James Hiller 0 (Round 4)

Mark Taylor 0 Andrew Robinson 1 (Round 7)

Ray Adams 0 Russell Lyons 1 (Round 9)

Tonight’s most significant result was Russell’s victory which meant the end of Ray’s perfect score. Ray attempted a sacrificial attack which left him with a good position for a piece down, but he was unable to press home his advantage.

James started badly by assuming Kieran’s scoresheet was his own and attempting to snuffle it. The DOP intervened and informed James he should get his own scoresheet rather than assume his opponent’s. After this, James played solidly enough until move 16 when he allowed a knight to be pinned to his queen with a pawn capture. After this all moves were forced. Kieran’s claim after the game of making a queen sacrifice was put into perspective when it was realised that James could capture the queen only at the expense of his king.

Peter Hiller came along to cheer his brother, and also played several games with Joseph who has returned to the club.
