Needing just 2.5 points from 4 games to win the tournament outright, Tony started badly, losing both games to Nathan. He could still salvage a play-off, but missed chances in the first game against Brian and then lost to a mate in one. Brian reverted to his usual form in game two, making a blunder in the second move (1.e4 e5, 2. f4 f5).

Tony commented after the games were played that there is a recent trend of last night capitulations. Instances cited were Kieran’s last round loss to Mark in the 2007 SW Trophy, and Brendan losing his last two games in this year’s SW Trophy. The deciding fixtures for the 2002 Allegro were also memorable in this way.

Nathan powered home in the last few nights of the tournament and gained 5 from 6 against the top three seeds. His late run meant that he was able to pip Kieran for third place on a tie-break. In fact, Nathan had easily the best tie-break score of the tournament due to his good results against the top half of the table.

Joe Tarnawski paid a visit to the club tonight and showed that at 81 years old he is no pushover. He warmed up against Greg in a slower game, then struggled at one stage against Andrew (WLLLLDLL), but improved as the night wore on, and managed a 4-1 blitz result (WLWWW) against the in-form Nathan (who regretted not stopping at 1-1), and then beat Andrew (WWD) in the final games.
