John Roper 0 Nick Kospartov 1

Mark Taylor 0 Peter Ford 1

James Hiller 0 Josh Ford 1 – on forfeit

On board one Ray had an advantage in a knight plus pawns endgame and could possibly have converted his one pawn advantage into victory. However he lost his nerve on the third request for a draw from his opponent. Subsequent analysis showed that Ray may have won a difficult queen versus queen endgame, which would have been a draw at worst for white.

One game went longer than Ray’s game and this was the Brendan-Garvin clash which resulted in Brendan joining the group of players on three points. Similarly Nathan won his game to stay in contact with the leaders.

Nick beat John as he did recently in a weekend tournament. Peter had an aggressive queen in the opening, but Mark seemed to be on his way to a big counter-play. However the final result went in Peter’s favour.

James failed to show up for his game and will not be included in the draw for future rounds. This means one player will receive a bye in each round.
