Tony Howes and Ray Adams remained the only two players with 100% records after the completion of the second round. Tony managed a comfortable victory in what was nevertheless an interesting game.

Brian managed to exchange of queens early and then always had enough of the play to ensure an advantage that kept Andrew from clawing his way back into the game. When Andrew offered a draw, Brian accepted almost before the words had been spoken. However this hasty acceptance belied the fact that Brian had the initiative and probably a winning position. This statement does not take into account the infirmity of the player with the black pieces who had only just before made an illegal move when in check and was possibly on the point of a self-imploding move. Andrew’s therefore “generous” draw offer ensured that the club did not witness a repeat of the classic Willcock line of a queen/rook sac, possible followed by a Van Klumff gambit.

Brendan stated after his game with Kieran that it was “a draw from move one”. In the manner of his usual close observance of the rules and etiquette of chess, Brendan offered a draw on Kieran’s move, but this proved unimportant as Kieran accepted anyway.

Ray managed a win against Garvin in Room B8. Ray was a piece up at the end, but beyond this little is known of the game played in the “exclusive room”.

Nathan and Mark had expected victories, but it was the other two games in the bottom half of the draw that excited the most comment. Peter obtained what at this stage of his chess career must be described as an upset victory when he defeated Nick Kospartov, a veteran of the Queensland chess scene for more than 25 years (he competed the first edition of The Gap Open in 1980!). Brendan commented that the game was “blunder and counter-blunder”, but to the GM most of our games would be described this way, wouldn’t they? Peter suggested that Nick resigned prematurely, however he was pleased to have achieved his first Flood Cup victory.

The other game saw Greg beat James in double-quick time. James had advised the DOP before the start of the game that he would like to get things underway early if possible, due to an important social engagement he was attending after the game. The nature of this social engagement aroused great speculation within the club. Greg’s observations on the game follow:
