Report – 1 February 2008

The Special General Meeting continued tonight. The details of the meeting are contained in the minutes.

Lightning Tournament

By the standard of lightning tournaments tonight’s play was relatively incident free. The only question raised occurred when Nathan observed Garvin’s flag had fallen and claimed victory only to have the claim rejected because his own flag had fallen also, and prior to him making his claim.

John Roper managed perhaps the most innovative illegal move of the night moving his bishop from f8 to b4 over the top of a pawn on c5.

At the top of the table Brian maintained his domination of recent years in this tournament. Andrew with white was at least level with Brian with a minute each to go, but played on rather than offering a draw and lost the initiative and the game. Garvin managed a draw with Brian to keep the following week interesting. In this game Garvin had a significant advantage but decided to sac a bishop and force a draw by repetition rather than risk playing on and losing all.

One pleasing aspect of the tournament has been the participation of junior players. Jonathan Bester played particularly well, winning four of his 10 games on the night.

Quote of the night

“I prefer to be a loose man”- Ray when queried as to whether he would enter the Lightning Tournament.
