Report – 11 January 2008

Eight players greeted in the New Year at the club. Andrew Robinson and Ray Adams opened up, while John Roper, Mark Borill, Nathan Shaw, Jack Badenhorst, Greg Colwell and Mark Taylor also had their names entered into the night fee book.

Mostly social games were played, however the room was so intense at one stage that Mark enquired if a wake was occurring. However, once the 45 Minute final was over and a few players went out to the verandah to catch up on the latest news and stories, the atmosphere lightened up – although Ray continued his Flood Cup-style marathon game with Mark which ended in a draw after Mark found a late remedy to Ray’s almost decisive combination.

45 Minute Tournament 2007

Fueled by “Vitamin V” drink (actually a concoction of carbonated water, sugar, caffeine and guarana) the two players were able to sustain a high well into the endgame. Andrew was probably fortunate that he was oblivious to the fact that he had lost a pawn in the opening and played more recklessly than normal. Nathan played well in the opening but managed to lose his advantage through having his pieces tied up in the middle game which led to the inevitability of the endgame conclusion. Nathan was down to 20 seconds and Andrew 50 seconds at the end, so it could be said that the game went down to the wire.

Final: Andrew Robinson 1 Nathan Shaw 0

Quote of the night

The ascension of a club member to CAQ presidency, for the first time in The Gap CC’s history, was noted and acknowledged around the club. Congratulations Garvin, we watch with interest, and look forward to your stint as president.
