In addition to the players present, only John and Greg braved the cold to make an appearance tonight.

Ray knocked off the current Flood Cup champion with his trademark consistent play, but also one brilliant move that immediately sealed the encounter. At move 11 Ray captured a pawn, and Andrew realised his knight and bishop would be pawn forked upon re-capture. Andrew spent seven minutes in calculation before deeming it safe to capture the pawn. However it took six further moves to rescue the knight after the pawn push through a series of moves that avoided piece loss. This was a crucial loss of momentum for white, and in a still materially equal game black held a slight material ascendancy. At move 28 Andrew thought he could swap off the remaining pieces, and then win the game due to superior king position. However, he failed to consider 29… e4! into his calculations, and this fatal oversight trapped white’s king and allowed black the cruise to victory at his pleasure.

Nathan reports below on his game with Garvin:

The game started along standard Sicilian lines with an early Bg5 by white and immediate fianchetto by black into the dragon. Black accepted the loss of the isolated d-pawn in return for greater activity, and I think I was compensated as white castled queenside - perhaps not if castling had been kingside.

White exchanged down and black equalised on material, before white's active knight was trapped behind enemy lines, and he was forced to lose the piece for two pawns. From there black's pieces were coordinated well enough to deflect white's attack and once the rooks were off the board white soon resigned. However, black had to navigate a few tricky moves by white to hold the advantage.

Quote of the night

“Ray, I suppose you want to turn this conversation to more wholesome subjects” – Nathan, to which the reply follows..

“Well if I could just shoot across the bows, even though we know that Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed Solomon king, how did you get your name?” – Ray

“I PUT queen en pris, I did not LEAVE it en pris” – Brian, quickly scuttling any rumours that he is a reckless player
