The One Hour tournament commenced tonight with three Round One fixtures and a brought-forward Round Nine fixture played. Other than the eight contestants only Ernie (briefly) and Peter Hiller came to the club on a very cold June night – winter has arrived!

Kieran may be hard to stop in this tournament after knocking off the top seed in the first round. It seemed to be an even game, but Kieran got the better position with her rook and minor piece towards the end.

Greg held an advantage for much of his game against Cameron before a bad move let him down. However, Greg suggested that his lack of endgame experience may have costs him in the end anyway.

Nathan’s first competition game was a loss but certainly no disgrace and he will surely win a few games in this tournament. For much of the game he was a pawn up, but put too much effort into trying to hold an isolated rook pawn. This eventually resulted in the loss of a piece, although as was demonstrated after the game, even this could have been avoided with accurate play.

Russell knocked over John in the other game in the earliest game to finish.

Quote of the night

“In the last rating period I played five games (all Odd Knights tournament), won four and drew one. My rating went down 19 points…” – Andrew

Also, some obscure observation on the proximity of important dates for a notable Olympian and the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu ….
