Two draws on the top three boards and an upset on board two have left this year’s tournament the most wide-open Flood Cups in many years. Tonight was a noisy night with the blue light disco powering away in the hall on top of the hill, while rowdy youths were running around the school being chased away by security.

Tony got away with a draw after his game reached this position.

Even before the first move was made the arbiter was summoned to the Gray-Tools ie game. Alex had arrived late and Garvin had started the clock with it being on Alex’s less favoured side. Alex claimed the right to choose but a quick scan of the Laws of Chess revealed this was the arbiter’s prerogative and the clock stayed where it was. During the middle of the game it was noted that Alex was a piece up (R+N+B v R+B) but Garvin was 3 or 4 pawns to the good – ample compensation for the piece as it turned out.

Cameron offered a draw very early on, within 30 minutes of the start, He made a further draw offer, then Ernie made two draw offers and Cameron accepted the second one. Andrew’s game with John was straightforward after a knight fork won the exchange.

In his own words, Ellis “was actually a piece up for the cost of a couple of pawns when I lost concentration and gave it back”. Brian’s take on the game was slightly different: “I undeservedly won what Ellis termed an exciting game – a comedy of errors in which he had the ill fortune to make the last”.

The captain won in board six to join four other players with a 50% record.
