Six games were played tonight. Thanks go to Greg and Garvin who agreed at short notice to play each other tonight after the original fixture Roper v Gray could not be played due to John’s late advice of his non-attendance.

All games went to the higher seeds except for the De Vere – Robinson game. For the second year running Andrew succumbed to an under-rated opponent in the first round of the Flood Cup. Cameron played strongly throughout maintaining pressure and thoroughly deserved his win. Andrew blundered into mate at the end but it is unlikely that the result would have changed even if this had not occurred.

Brian reported that his game was a masterpiece finished in less than 20 moves. Unfortunately for him, he was on the wrong side of the result!  Tony commented: “My game with Brian was quite interesting - an early gambit pawn was quickly returned (in the spirit of Gap Chess Club games), and the opening saw Brian making a series of queen moves. Unfortunately (for Brian) he moved a knight (rather than continue with the queen sortie) which led to a skewer of queen and rook, which could only be avoided by a check which led to a fork of the same two pieces.”

Ellis reported on his game: “I was a pawn up but still in a relatively even position when I gave away a rook for a bishop and suffered a long and miserable death.”

Quote of the night

There was a good one, but unfortunately it is unpublishable. Oh well, why not…

“Oh! Oh! Well! … There’s nothing wrong with that” – the taken-aback reply of one player when he enquired as to the religion of his opponent and received a reply he hadn’t expected.
