Report – 26 January 2007

Tonight saw ten players in attendance – the eight players involved in tournament games, and John Roper & Phil Kirkman. Phil advised that he will be with us until February; then he’s off to Limey for a couple of years.

Lightning Tournament

Results:

Brian Willcock 1 Peter Hiller 1

Just one pairing was played late into the night. Brian won the first easily on time, but then could not push through in game two and lost on an illegal move when he was just about to lose on time.

Odd Knights Tournament

Results:

Andrew Robinson 1 Ellis Markson 0

Ray Adams ½ Cameron De Vere ½

Mark Taylor 1 John Curran 0

Three games were played tonight. Ray accepted a draw offer from Cameron in very short time. Mark and John’s game was “end-to-end stuff” in football parlance, until Mark prevailed. Ellis was significantly in front until a knight sac that proved unsound.

Quote of the night

“Take that lice-ridden beard elsewhere” – Phil sledging the venerable Mr Willcock. This led to suggestions that the lice actually signal the moves to Brian (although they have a blind spot for queens). There was even talk of a movie about Mr Willcock’s chess career called “Lice of Brian”, but this seemed to be going too far….
