Tonight a further 14 games were played. Everyone was involved in lightning play except Ray and new member John Roper who played a few slower games.

The old grudge match resumed and James pulled an upset against the out-of-form John Curran in games one. James was a long was ahead on the board but making no headway and seemed in danger of losing on time when John made an illegal move and James claimed victory. Second time round and it was a different story with John achieving an early bishop-queen mate on the a1-h8 diagonal. At the end of the game John acknowledged that he had given a boost to James’ confidence with his collapse in the first game.

Other games went mainly to form, although Mark played above himself and seems extremely unlikely to repeat his wooden-spoon performances of the past two years. Tonight also saw the match up of first and second from last year between Brian Thomas (fresh from coming second behind Sherab Guo-Yuthok in the Australian Major in Canberra) and Andrew Robinson. Brian easily won game one on the board, but needed the clock to win game two against an opponent who negligently concentrated on winning on the board when the clock was always going to be determinant!
