Eleven sets of games were played tonight by the eleven players that showed up. The other three all had provided reasons why they could not come. In addition to the tournament players we also welcomed Tony from West End to the club for the first time and three junior players were in attendance (Douglas, Samuel & BJ).

The three top seeds – Brian, Tony and Andrew – all maintained 100% records. Brian looked untroubled to win his six games. Andrew won comfortably against Ellis who played slowly and seemed to have trouble adjusting to the time control. He also won well against Gordon in the first game when Gordon was playing at blitz pace. In the second game Gordon was a key pawn up and dominating a R+BvR+N endgame until Andrew’s aggressive play won the bishop, then successfully guarded against Gordon’s marauding passed pawns.

There was only one minor note of discord during the night for the arbiter during the second Lyons-Curran game. Both players had a knight and three pawns, although John had a slight positional advantage. However John seemed intent on avoiding defeat by moving around without a clear purpose or a plan to force his advantage. Kieran then claimed a draw on three-fold repetition. John claimed repetition had only occurred twice. Unfortunately the recent moves had not been witnessed by a third party so the arbiter directed play to continue. Soon after, John was able to force victory through the simple expedient of throwing off his ultra defensive tactics of his previous moves. The Olympic champion was very gracious about the manner of her defeat and should be congratulated for her sportsmanship.

The tournament will now be a 14 player round-robin. This follows the withdrawal of Garvin Gray during the week, and the non-appearance of Dusan Smrek. The three games played by Garvin last Friday will not count in the determination of the final standings.
