Because of the school being closed on 7 July 2006 due to the asbestos roofing being replaced, Round 3 had to be completed tonight. One game was played early on Monday night, while three games were decided on forfeit. Tony and Greg both notified of their non-availability, while Tony also notified that he will be unable to attend for the next two weeks. Hence Tony (at his request) and Tom (who just did not show up for his Round 3 game) will be awarded zero point byes for Round 4.

Brian came to Andrew’s house in the evening on the day that the World Cup Final had been played. There was no head-butting, insulting language or dubious refereeing decisions. Instead Andrew started well enough but lost the centre of the board to a well-planned positional counter-attack from Brian. Unlike their Flood Cup game which was as good as over at half-time, this game went close to the bitter end, although even this was slightly premature due to an over-adventurous and unnecessary risk by Andrew which came unstuck.

Ray and Debbie had close but comfortable enough wins in their games.

Tim surprised Mark by starting with an uncharacteristic e4 and then following up with a flurry of attacking moves which only came unstuck towards the end.

James and John resumed their long-standing rivalry. James was late for his game, driving down from Gatton where he is temporarily working. John sportingly (or we would be saying “foolishly” if he had lost) allowed James to start with his full complement of time. Half-way through the game James came into the social chess room and announced “My face is stone expressionless. Like the Russians. I can read him like a book. My opponent shows his emotions easily.” James avoided early mistake but lost towards the end. His account: “I did a clumsy tackle near the end and had a man sent off. One mistake was enough for a 1-0 win. John played defensively, just exchanging. I think he likes to go for the penalty shootout as he had an extra man and could have won it in regulation time when he was a bishop ahead…” (“Enough!” I hear the reader cry!).

Three strong chess players from Queensland University graced our chess club with their presence (including Alex Toolsie & Sean). They report that chess at the university has fallen away in recent times due to the graduation of the chief organiser – always a problem at the uni….

Stuart Wilson also attended, having walked from his West Ashgrove house (as he is no longer driving due to deteriorating eyesight), and then on his own insistence walking back again! Stuart is having his eyes operated on soon and may be out of action for a while, but we hope to see him back again in a few months time (and he may be at chess next Friday).

Quote of the night

“There are many strange people in the chess world. But I don’t think there are any strange people at this club, he he.. he he he. .he he.. ” – Ray to Ellis (who by the end of this had a surprised look on his face!).
