One Hour/Maiden Tournament

Round 1 results:

Tony Howes 1 Cameron De Vere 0

James Hiller 0 Garvin Gray 1 (on forfeit)

Tom Szekely 1 Greg Colwell 0

During the past week Cameron and Garvin reported that Mick (who they ran into at the Queensland Championships) had decided on the spur of the moment to leave Brisbane and move to Sydney following a spat with his landlord. Unfortunately he did not advise the DOP of this tournament of this. Fortunately however, the DOP remembered that Tom Szekely had requested four weeks ago to be in this tournament. Therefore Tom was allowed to fill in for Mick’s first round game, with his opponent Greg agreeing to this arrangement.

Three games were to be played tonight, but unfortunately James Hiller did not appear for his fixture. The DOP will contact James to seek a reason and then make a determination on whether he should be allowed to remain in the tournament. The decision would have been clear-cut and made tonight if there were an odd number of entries.

Tony won his game with Cameron despite having to leave for over twenty minutes in the middle of his game to perform taxi service for one of his children. This arrangement had already been agreed to by the two players and the DOP prior to the start of the game.

Tom and Greg were both playing their first tournament game at The Gap and Tom won convincingly benefiting from his many more years of experience in front of the chess board. Tom had difficulty with using the clock and recording moves, but assured the DOP that this will not be a problem in later games following a brief lecture from the DOP on the expectations and requirements of tournament play.

Mark Wardle appeared tonight for a rare visit, along with a healthy attendance of social players (Gordon, Mark, Stuart, Andrew, Debbie, Marty, John, Ray).

Quote of the night

“Where’s Marty?” – Everyone asked Debbie who arrived an hour before the star of the show
