An exciting last night saw two trophies decided and many close results.

Brian Thomas won comfortably against Andrew to claim the Flood Cup for the second time, the first time being when he was joint first with Luke Murray in 2000.

Shane upset Mick on ratings, but not on form, to put pressure on Marty who needed at least a draw to win the Handicap Trophy. Marty was in time trouble when he lost the exchange, and after that it was really Phil’s game. So Shane won his first trophy, however Marty did gain some form of compensation through tie-breaks to gain a well deserved fourth place in the overall tournament.

Debbie and Ray were involved in the last game to finish and agreed to a draw which meant that a record eight players finished on four points.

John and Tim provided upsets on the lower boards. Ellis was a piece up but threw away his advantage to hand John a victory that he savoured. Tim was overjoyed to claim his first win in tournament play in a see-sawing game.

Notes on Handicap trophy calculations

The player with the highest "Handicap Total" wins the Handicap Trophy.

The "Handicap Total" is obtained by adding the Handicap (column five above) to the player's points gained in the Flood Cup.

Handicaps are calculated at: [(1743 minus rating) divided by 200].

To avoid statistical distortions, James Hiller has 300 points added to his ratings for handicap purposes only.

Tim Johnson and Russell Lyons have been given provisional ratings for handicap purposes only.

Quote of the night

“He was too much of a gentleman to accept a draw” – Phil on Marty’s declining of the chance to claim the Handicap Trophy through acceptance of a dubious draw offer
