Interclub v Samford Valley Chess Club

Samford Valley Chess Club came to The Gap with seven players challenging to overcome their rival club for the first time in a series that began in 2003. The Gap had six players at the commencement with Brian Thomas and John Curran playing a Flood Cup game. This game finished early so that John was able to give Samford president Digby Shaw a game.

The first game to finish was Board Four in which Mick won in Allegro, if not Lightning, speed. Robert admitted afterwards that he played too quickly, but Digby assured us that Robert has actually been one of Samford’s stronger players of late.

Next to finish was Hans who beat a Gap player for the first time, thus ending a long losing streak. However, Hans’ biggest problem has been the clock and again he had only two minutes left as he continually forgot to hit his clock. So a just result and victory to Hans can equally be attributed to Cameron’s gentlemanly conduct in refraining from exploiting Hans’ failure to use the clock.

The Gap again pulled in front when Phil beat Gabby in an interesting tactical game, so that Phil didn’t get home in time to watch The Chaser’s War on Everything – ABC 9:40pm. Mark also beat Neil as he did last year, but then Digby brought it back to 3-2 to The Gap. Andrew Robinson won the “Battle of the Andrews” to pull The Gap into an unbeatable 4-2 advantage, while the game that went down to the wire saw Bob beat Ray so that it ended 4-3.

Flood Cup

Round 1 result:

Brian Thomas 1 John Curran 0

Brian won comfortably enough in 29 moves. The game finished quickly for a Flood Cup game. John had time to complete an interclub game with a Samford player after his Flood Cup game. His interclub game was still one of the first to finish.

There was no last minute entrant, so Ellis Markson receives a half point bye for Round One.
