Sixteen sets of lightning games were played tonight. There were few upsets with the best result from an underdog being Marty’s draw in his first game with Phil – in a game he could have won with a little more aggression in the endgame.

The only match up between the top seed was the Phil – Brian Thomas clash. The first game was virtually decided on a touch move call after Phil had touched a pawn with his bishop, the enforced capture backwards by a knight causing loss of a piece and the contest. The second game was decided on an illegal move when Phil seemed to be in a winning position (see quote below). There appears to be the makings of a rivalry which will add interest when Phil is defending the Flood cup and The One Hour later in the year.

Ray Adam and Stuart Wilson also came along tonight making the attendance ten players again. This is likely to pick up as the Flood Cup approaches.

Quote of the night

“Do you know how much time he had left against me? Two seconds! Two ***ing seconds!!!”

“Why do we have this tournament at all” – Debbie (and others)

“”Scared to face me is he?” – Brian W commenting on Phil’s “Bolton (sic) like the wind”, ie his early departure.
