The club welcomes back Brian Thomas after a five year absence. Brian was playing at Redcliffe Chess Club until about a year ago. He has also been playing a lot of Internet speed chess which seems to have sharpened up his fast game.

So far there are 11 confirmed entrants to the Lightning – all 9 who completed the tournament last year together with Mick Waters and Brian Thomas. Of those present tonight, Ray Adams, Shane Martin and Stuart Wilson all declared Five Minute Chess not to their liking and declined to enter. (Actually, and just for the record, Shane technically entered the tournament, then withdrew ten minutes later).

Debbie, Mick and Brian Willcock did not play any tournament games tonight, so the action was shared around the other four entrants. Brian convincingly won 5 of his 6 games and should have won his second game against Andrew with black but made an illegal move conceding the game (Brian had 23 seconds remaining to Andrew’s 10 seconds).

In the other games Marty threw away the first game where he was in front against Peter, then was beaten decisively in the second. Both players seemed to be focused totally on the board near the end when either could have worked the clock to their advantage and won on time. Marty said afterwards that his chess style is more analytical and that he is considering retiring from Blitz tournaments for a while. We will see! However it should be noted that Peter has a respectable record in our Lightning Tournament – he has competed every year from 2000 to 2005 finishing between 4th and 9th – and shouldn’t be taken lightly by his opponents.
