Tonight saw a relatively small turnout tonight, with only Stuart, Ray, Marty, Debbie, Mark, Tim and Mick turning up. Patrick arrived at the club for the first time tonight and the former 1800 player was competitive in his games against Debbie and Ray.

The results tonight were mostly clear cut, with only Mark and Mick sharing the honours in their pairing. Their games were by far the most interesting of the night. Mark was being hammered in his first game against Mick, but found an unexpected checkmate. In their second game, Mark had the advantage of Q v R + B against Mick, when Mick delivered his own surprise checkmate.

Marty had a stellar night by his standards, winning all 5 games he played. His first game against Mick was comfortable, but he had to recover from a piece down in the second game to finish with a material advantage by endgame. Marty's games against Stuart were also relatively comfortable, with a superior pawn count being the difference in both games. Remarkably, Stuart finished the second game with 11:08 on his clock, almost a full minute more than he started with.

The closest game of the night was the remaining fixture between Mark and Marty. The game balanced on a knife-edge, with Marty having a N + 7P v N + 6P material advantage but Mark having an important passed pawn. In what was a difficult endgame for both players, Marty's single pawn advantage was enough to grind out a win in a game that could have gone either way.

Other results on the night were very one-sided, with Mick easily defeating Stuart in both games. Ray went on a piece-hunting rampage against Tim, and those results brought out the mentor in Ray. Drawing upon his vast knowledge, he spoke to Tim on the importance of a pawn presence in the centre, and of course, the virtues of the French defence.

Quote of the night

"Bloody knights!" - Mark, laughing at the mental torture brought on by the intricacies of a knight endgame.

"I only play a bit against the family..." - Patrick, hiding his true colours until the subject of ratings came up.

"Just seeing the board is an achievement." - Stuart, after falling to an unseen checkmate down the flank against Mick.
