Tonight’s action took place in D block (rooms 4-5-6) due to our regular rooms being occupied by an Open Day that the school had prepared for the weekend.

Two forfeits occurred tonight which may contribute significantly to the determination of the final prize winners. Suneel was ill and advised that he would have to forfeit his game, which dents his Maiden Trophy aspirations significantly. James also got a free point which helps him climb off the bottom. Tony also received a free point when Harvey failed to show, to keep himself in with an outside chance of achieving first place.

Ray seemed to have the upper hand on board one after getting the better of the opening. Going into the endgame he was a pawn up with R+N v R+B. However Phil’s superior king position and stronger bishop saw him grab a pawn after the rooks were swapped, and then move in for the kill by snatching a rook file pawn. “I’ll get him one of these days” was overheard being uttered by Ray after the game.

On board two, after an even opening Mick lost his way and Andrew was starting to mount an attack down the b-file. Then Mick nearly fell off his seat when Andrew played QxB at move 16 – Mick could capture the queen only at the costs of Bb2 and the resultant checkmate. Play continued for a few more moves, however the game was effectively over at this point.

Debbie and Stuart played a see-sawing game (in Debbie’s own words) which saw lots of opportunities on both sides. Debbie was carrying a virulent strain of some disease that nobody else wanted to catch (except maybe Stuart) and so this game was played in a separate room from the other games. Stuart had a great attack, however he was vulnerable due to his forward king placement on e3 for much of the game. In the end Stuart fell to a little trick of Debbie’s, however with longer time controls this might have been averted (both players were inside the last ten minutes).

The other two games were close, with Garvin having a slight edge against Mark throughout most of the game. However with accurate play and better use of time within the last five minutes (I know this is asking a lot!) Mark might have ended with a better result. Marty also had a slight edge against Shane for most of the game, however a gross blunder in time trouble sealed Shane’s fate.

Quote of the night

“What do think of this board position? Even though I’m two pieces down, it’s quite a sound position” – James (it wasn’t, and he was soon checkmated).

‘I know Ray’s an expert on the French, so I thought: “I’ll play the English. The English always beat the French.” I forgot that I didn’t know how to play the English’ – Phil, on why he got into trouble in the opening.

“I shouldn’t say this, but for a sick girl you’re playing really well” – Stuart to Debbie during their game.
