Interclub v Samford Valley Chess Club

Samford Valley Chess Club came to The Gap with six players tonight to challenge our club as part of a continuing friendly rivalry. The Gap had 8 players, so with reluctance and loathing we loaned Shane to Samford for the night, a move we were later to regret. Despite the final scoreline of 5-2 to The Gap all of the games were close apart from Phil Kirkman’s game in which he gained a large advantage early on. Andrew played Bob Beeley who attended The Gap club maybe 20-25 years ago with his sons, but had not played much chess since, until joining Samford six months ago. Andrew played an aggressive game and managed to sacrifice the exchange which forced a winning combination. Ray lost his way a bit going towards the endgame and was fortunate that he was able to queen first to win. Mark was able to eke a win out of a game that had a rook ending with a pawn gridlock across the centre. He and Shane both achieved their first win in a full-length tournament game, after Shane won comfortably against Stuart.

Flood Cup 2005 results in detail

Quote of the night

Ray tried to re-arrange his Flood Cup fixture with Phil. “When’s Easter?” – Phil to Ray (who looked suitably disgusted)

Ray discussed his proposal to have a grading comp with relegation which brought up the problem of players too good for Group B, but who will struggle in Group A. “Brian will oscillate at the bottom” – Phil said again and again with subtle variation, showing how much he has matured over the past ten years….
