The results of all the games played tonight followed the pecking order of ratings with the higher rated players winning. However this only tells part of the story and it was certainly not a night of “Round One whitewash”, which often occurs in the first round of a tournament such as this that uses Swiss pairings.

Andrew’s defence of the Flood Cup started against Garvin Gray who held out right down to the endgame. This was the last game to finish (11:45pm) and there were a few tricks in the endgame that could have thrown the game open to a different outcome.

The toughest game of the night was definitely the Howes-Chadwick tussle which went down to the last 15 minutes on the clock for both players, with the game locked in the middle game when a simple blunder cost Marty a checkmate. However up to this point there were lots of pieces on the board and while Marty held a small material advantage, such were the complications that Tony had lots of opportunities to threaten what eventually came to pass.

Harvey had a simple win against Stuart after the latter blundered a piece, while Debbie gained a large positional advantage early which converted to a winning superiority later in the game. Brian was a piece down early on after a sacrifice, but played well to win against Mark.

The disappointment of the night was the non-appearance of Peter Hiller which gave Phil Kirkman a free point. This situation left Phil quite annoyed that he had to sit out the action. If Peter does this again during the tournament he will be out.

Cameron De Vere sent an email to the DOP on Wednesday evening advising that he would unfortunately have to withdraw from the tournament due to changing work arrangements that force him to work on Friday evenings until 10pm. Therefore Gabriel Boross received a full point bye for this game. Mick Waters from Townsville came to the club tonight for the first time and requested entry to the Flood Cup. As Cameron’s withdrawal leaves the tournament with an odd number of players (15) the DOP accepted Mick’s late entry. He will receive no points for Round 1 but will be in the draw for the second round. Mick has an ACF rating of 1290 in the December list and will therefore have a handicap of 1.85 for the Handicap Trophy component of this tournament.

The draw for Round 2 will be released after the Adams-J Hiller game has been played. This game has been postponed until Tuesday 8 March by mutual agreement of the players and will be played at Ray’s house.
