Report – 14 January 2005

John Curran announced that tonight will be his last night at the chess club as he will be leaving for Melbourne soon. John has been an enthusiastic equipment officer as well being an integral member of the club, and his presence at the club will be missed.

Lightning Tournament

Only five sets of games were played tonight, however several of these will be important in shaping the final standings for this competition. Andrew beat George in both games over the board, while Phil had to recover from a game down in each fixture. Against Harvey in game one he had a time and position advantage but conceded the initiative and a checkmate, while in the first game against Andrew he had huge positional superiority but allowed his queen to be trapped and swapped for a rook.

All players in this tournament must have played at least one game by 21 Jan 2005 to enter, as well as paying all membership and tournament fees. There will be six nights to complete fixtures: Jan 7, 14, 21; Feb 4, 11, 18.

Results:

George 2 Harvey 0

Andrew 2 George 0

Phil 1 Harvey 1

Andrew 1 Phil 1

Brian 2 Debbie 0

Andrew’s win against Debbie and Debbie’s failure to beat Brian ensured that Andrew and George tied for first place in Group B. A coin was tossed and George correctly called ‘heads’ which means he will play-off for the title against Phil Kirkman.
