Report – 29 October 2004

Allegro tournament

Eight sets of games were played tonight, with two of the big guns (Tony and Harvey) absent and another one (George) unable to play his two remaining opponents.

Peter and John both played well to gain a win and a draw respectively against Ray.

Stuart Holt held positional advantages going into the endgame both times against Andrew but failed to capitalise. The position in game 2 (Stuart was white) looked like this when the endgame commenced: (W – Kf2 Rh1 Rh5 a2 b2 e2 e5 h6; B – Kf7 Rd2 Rh8 a7 b6 c5 e6).

There are now four Fridays left to play all remaining games (November 5, 12, 19, 26).

The club’s AGM will be on Friday 3 December.

Outside of the tournament the most notable occurrence was the appearance of 2003 Flood Cup winner Eric Faccer, bringing back the trophies he won last year (he also won the Handicap). He said that he has not played so much in the last 12 months, but there was still an edge to his play and he won most of his games. George played Eric in a couple of games and showed that there is still no love lost in this rivalry that stretches back to last year’s Flood Cup.

When asked, Eric reported that Aaron Michaux was living a ‘country bumpkin’ lifestyle in Nova Scotia, Canada last time he heard…

Late news: Adam Lucas has advised of his withdrawal from the tournament. (Life’s hectic, child due in a couple of weeks, but keen to be back early next year!). His games played so far (against Andrew, Ray and Peter) will not be included in the final crosstable, as Adam has played less than half of his games.

Quote of the night

“But I have gained 10 kilos since I joined this club!” – Debbie, refuting allegations that we had to pander to her sensitivities by not publishing this quote from 3 weeks ago
