Report – 10 September 2004

One Hour tournament

Round 12 results:

Debbie Jenkins 1 George Flitcroft-Smith 0

Andrew Robinson ½ Luthien Russell ½

Round 13 result:

Marty Chadwick 0 Brian Willcock 1

Three games were played, the results of which make for a very interesting final round. George misjudged a combination against Debbie and lost a rook, after which the fight to win was fairly hopeless. Luthien pulled a brilliant move out of the hat at move 19 that caused Andrew to spend 16 minutes on his next move and gave Luthien the initiative. Luthien eventually accepted a draw offer from Andrew who realised what was going on in the other game.

Brian and Marty brought forward their game from next week and in the end Brian won a tight contest that could have gone either way. The James Hiller v Stuart Holt game has been postponed to Sept 24.

There were three visitors tonight: Dusan Smrek, who has been around recently; Adam Lucas, a Gap local who is coming back to the game after a long lapse; and Terry Krause from the Suncoast club. Of these, the first two have expressed interest in entering the Allegro tournament which starts on September 24.

Quote of the night

“I would say that Debbie owes her victory tonight to the skilful exploitation of the Vietnamese Gambit” - Brian.
