Four games were played tonight. The most important in relation to the top of the table was the Howes – Russell match. According to Tony, Luthien gave away a piece fairly softly and then Tony battled with the position and time despite overwhelming odds to finally finish off the game with two minutes left.  The battle of the Stuarts was won by Mr Holt when Mr Wilson bungled a piece at about the 20 move mark. George had to struggle to win his game which was not handed to him on a plate. Andrew likewise had a tough game against Marty who was pressing for most of the game and was one good move away from a better result (according to some acute observers $500 changed hands before the game, but at present these can only be attested to be unsubstantiated rumours. However Andrew’s recent form does lead some to strongly consider the veracity of the rumour monger’s statements).

And some mail on last week’s news report from a certain Mr Willcock addressed to this website:

“Searching desperately for a legal rep to launch abusive lawyer’s letters and more. If you wish to avoid action I expect you to make disavowals on the website. First the DOP’s canting screed of 6 Aug. ‘I usually start my games at 8.40’ needs the addition of ‘unless my opponent is Brian – when I start the clock at 8 25 and on his arrival at 8.40 try to persuade him to delay his progress to the tournament room.’ George’s subtle but vicious attack has also not gone unnoticed – he can hardly have meant (13 Aug) that my play has improved.”

(Disclaimer: The opinions in the above paragraph do not reflect the opinions of The Gap Chess Club nor do they reflect the opinions of any but the aforementioned Mr Willcock who of course has every right to his opinion!).

Quote of the night

Friday the thirteenth, so no Hillers (other things to do no doubt!), hence the dearth of quotes…

“He played well. I think everyone at the club is improving.” – George on his game with John Curran.
