Two big upsets marked the final round as Debbie beat George and Marty beat Harvey. Debbie’s win combined with other Round 7 results meant that Debbie secured the Handicap Trophy for 2004.
When Debbie won it meant that Andrew Robinson had won the Flood Cup for a fourth time, joining Garry de Jager and Joe Tarnawski as 4 time winners. Andrew recovered from a losing position in the final round (16 Ng5 would have won for Stuart Holt) to ground out a win and finish the tournament undefeated.
George Flitcroft-Smith finished second in 2004, as he did in 2003, after a disappointing last round loss which belied the fact that he was the front runner for much of the tournament. His loss to Andrew in Round 5 was the result that ultimately decided the tournament. George has finished second or third in his past nine trophy tournaments and is surely overdue for a win in this year’s One Hour. Another second placing will see him destined to be known as “Greg Norman-Smith” within club circles!
Debbie Jenkins had a good Flood Cup and recovered from a first round loss to be undefeated for the rest of the tournament. She brought home the Handicap Trophy, and her third place finish was the highest placing by a female player in Flood Cup history.
Ray Adams did well with five wins but struggled against the stronger players. He said he was satisfied to have played in good games throughout the tournament (regardless of result) and put this down to the long time controls.
Stuart Holt started well in his first rated tournament, beating Debbie in the first round, but then dropped games to George, Ray and Andrew. The game with Ray was crucial and it could have gone either way. Overall, this was a good first tournament to come fifth, which included a win over the top seed Tony Howes.
Stefan Harmat provided the shock of the tournament when he beat Tony Howes in the first round. This propelled him into favouritism for the Handicap Trophy with his healthy handicap of 4.05. He beat Peter and Marty, but a draw with Brian in the final round cost him the Handicap prize.
Brian Willcock played to par and didn’t let the Indian bookmakers nobble him this time. He beat those lower rated, lost to those higher rated, and had the better of a draw with Stefan.
Tony Howes had a disappointing tournament which had many suggesting that the Indian bookmakers left Brian alone because Tony was a better catch. Tony lost his first two rounds to Stefan and Harvey and never recovered, losing a further game to Stuart Holt in round 6.
Harvey Quaresmini found that mixing chess with late night taxi driving is not a recipe for success. He was unlucky to lose to Andrew in round 3 after a good win against Tony in the previous round, but after this his tournament fell apart. Tenth place was Harvey’s lowest placing in the Flood Cup since 1982!
John Curran was not as successful in this tournament as he was last year but still managed 3 points from 7 and a respectable finish. John achieved wins against Stuart and James, and received a one point bye in the final round.
Stuart Wilson managed to find a way to lose all his games except for the wooden spoon match with James, which he seemed to win quite convincingly in the end.
James Hiller kept up his perfect record in the Flood Cup, losing a further 5 games to make his Flood Cup record: Played 27 Lost 27. However, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel and there were some good signs, especially in his game with John Curran. The club expects great things from James in the One Hour / Maiden tournament!!
Peter Hiller, Steve Quick and Garvin Gray all withdrew from the tournament before completing their games.
