Interclub v Samford Valley Chess Club

Samford Valley Chess Club came to The Gap and did well to achieve a 3.5-3.5 draw on the night. Gabby Boross visited The Gap for the first time this year and showed that he has lost none of his form by knocking off the highest rated Gap player. Andrew had a huge positional advantage early on against Robert Ryan of Samford but squandered this to go a piece down and had to scrape a draw on three-fold repitition. Harvey succumbed quickly to Digby with the game over inside 30 minutes. Debbie and Stuart Holt always seemed likely to win their games, as was Stuart Wilson to lose his. In the final game to be completed on the night, the two Rays came up against each other, both afficianados of slow chess. In the end The Gap’s Ray had a significant material advantage that he converted into victory thus saves the blushes of The Gap CC.

Flood Cup

Round 5 result:

James Hiller 0 John Curran 1

The lone Flood Cup game tonight reached the start of the middle game with James holding his own. Unfortunately he missed a blindingly obvious mate-in-one in a position where he held a slight initiative. The result: black knight on h4, black queen on g2, white king on g1. The end.
