Four games played tonight, plus one result decided by forfeit due to non-appearance. On the Monday following this night’s play it was learned that Steve Quick has had to withdraw from the tournament due to a transfer to Childers. This means there are now an even 14 players left fighting for Flood Cup honours.

Two reports on the night’s play follow.

Mr Chadwick’s report:

Marty Chadwick - Stuart Holt

Stuart had moved to a single pawn advantage by middle game. The game appeared to even out as endgame approached. Stuart then did a bishop sacrifice to open up Marty's kingside defence, and half a dozen checks later, achieved checkmate.

Ray Adams - Stefan Harmat

This was a closed game, with 14 pawns still on the board at move 32. It was at this point that Ray worked a good combination to clear a file for his doubled rooks and it opened up the game to his advantage. Stefan responded by working his knight to try and gain a pawn advantage, but he left his knight en pris which then gave Ray a R+BvR advantage. Resignation followed.

Debbie Jenkins - John Curran

John's pawns had control of the centre but he fell behind in development as a result. This allowed Debbie to cramp his pieces and create a strong kingside attack, after which John resigned.

Mr Willcock’s report (such as it is)

I can report that in the week following Peter’s confession of how James turned him on both Hillers seemed to be occupied in activities unrelated to chess and were too involved to come to The Gap.

Debbie and John got involved in an examination of whether, as John believed, central pawns were a compensation for failure to castle and a horribly constricted position. Debbie refuted John’s position with a savage attack on a pitifully under protected King.

For the rest I was playing Lightning with George and cannot report on the other games – but Marty has put them on the web in his damned play through mode.
