Flood Cup

Results:

Tony Howes 0 Stefan Harmat 1

John Curran 1 Stuart Wilson 0

The shock of the first round occurred in the delayed game between Tony and Stefan. Stefan was a pawn up but by no means was his advantage decisive when it reached 11pm and the game looked headed for an adjournment. The mention of this word seems to have caused something to click in Tony’s brain (as occurred last year in this tournament) and he promptly dropped a piece to a blunder and resigned.

Stuart played diabolically and had a lost game within a dozen moves of the start.

Lightning tournament

Try as he might, James was still not able to avoid another piece of wooden kitchenware to add to his growing collection. His best moment of the night was when he captured Marty’s queen that had been left en pris. James promptly offered a draw figuring that he had 1.5 minutes to 2.5 minutes and couldn’t possibly achieve checkmate in the remaining time.

Players with unplayed games will receive no points for these as tonight was the final night for completion of these games. Therefore, as a result of her wins tonight Debbie achieved third position in the final table of the tournament she most despises.

Tonight’s results:

Harvey 2 James 0

Debbie 2 James 0

Debbie 2 John 0

John 2 James 0

Marty 1½ James ½

45 minute tournament

Third place game: Ray 0 George 1.

Near the end of this game Ray announced to the DOP that he was pulling out of the Flood Cup. A minute later he resigned this game.

The DOP said that Ray should have a considered view to withdrawing from the Flood Cup (Ray said it was due to his poor play). An hour later he rescinded his earlier request.

Quote of the night

“She was holding on by the fingernails” – James on his lightning games with Debbie.

“It’s an education playing you” – James being more realistic about the Debbie games.

“We will decide when people will come and how they will come” – James again, this time on greater political ambitions.
