Most games went to plan as is supposed to be the case in the first round of a Swiss. The most interesting games involved the three new players with Stuart Holt and Steve Quick both scoring victories while Garvin Gray was unable to press his advantage (R+2P v R) in the endgame against Marty. The Chadwick-Gray game was the last game to finish for the evening.

There were mixed reactions to the new time controls and it will be interesting to see how these will affect later rounds. It was noted that several players had more time than they commenced with at the end of the game.

Two players arrived late and were therefore at a time disadvantage at the start. Peter was 40 minutes late while Harvey was 55 minutes late (just 5 minutes short of a forfeit). Players are reminded to be at the club on or before 8.30pm on match nights. This should be normal courtesy to your opponent. Due to the extended time controls for this tournament the DOP will be strictly enforcing the start time for games, and docking time for the latecomers.

Mark Wardle has been replaced in the tournament by new member Stefan Harmat. Tony Howes will now play his first round match against Stefan on 20 February.

Lightning tournament

James won his second game of the tournament in his second game against Brian with a Knight-Queen combination on g7. Brian actually saw it coming the split second that he had touched the wrong piece. Will James avoid the wooden spoon for the first time?

Quote of the night

“Let the workers of the world unite!” – James Hiller

“You’re a communistic swine, James!” – Mike Talbot ensuring that James’ chance of winning a senate seat are virtually zilch

“Come on James, fight back…. like John Hewson” – George to James

“Did you watch the ‘Allan Border Medal’ last night?” – James H to Peter H, in a desperate attempt to change the subject away from politics

“I saw this thing on the Internet but I better not say it” – James again…

“I don’t think we should sling sh*t at the @^ab$ because we $*d*m!$e our animals” – Mike Talbot on one of his ‘pet’ subjects…
