Report – 16 January 2004

Lightning tournament

Tonight’s results:

Andrew 1 George 1

Andrew 2 Harvey 0

Harvey 1 Debbie 1

Harvey 2 Marty 0

Debbie 1½ Brian ½

Debbie 2 Stuart 0

Peter 2 Brian 0

Brian 2 Marty 0

Andrew played Harvey in the first games of the night and two victories against the run of play were enough to assure him of victory in this tournament. George won the first game against Andrew to ruin chances of a 100% record, while Andrew recovered from a piece sac on George’s f2 square in the second game to win.

The most notable incident in the other games was one of Brian’s wins against Marty where he had made an illegal move (Qa1 to e6) just prior to checkmate – unfortunately not picked up by Marty. The other game saw Marty lose his queen resulting in one of the quotes of the year during post-match discussion.

While Andrew and George have secured first and second respectively, third place is still up for grabs with Harvey and Debbie favourites and Steve the outsider. Odds for James gaining third place can be obtained on application.

Lightning tournament 2004 results in detail

45 minute tournament

The draw was made to decide the winner of Group B. Peter was drawn out first and received 3rd place, followed by George, then Harvey. Harvey also won the draw for colours gaining white. However overly quick play saw him give away crucial pawns in the middle game, and with Andrew holding the initiative on the board it was only a matter of grinding away to the endgame. At the end of the game Harvey still had 37 minutes on his clock, Andrew had 34. Probably the effects of the lightning tournament.

Quote of the night:

“Graciously I said to my wife - go be a slut!” – Marty’s response to Brian’s assertion that Marty had graciously offered his queen in sacrifice rather than bludering it.

Peter Hiller: “Have you seen the TV show ‘Chains of Love’?”

Bystander: “No, what is it about?”

Peter Hiller: “I don’t know. But they tie people up and there are lots of whips and chains and leather and….(at this point Peter lost the ability to speak due to hyperventilation)”
