Report – 14 February 2003

Flood Cup

The draw for the 2003 Flood Cup was held tonight, initially as a 12 player round-robin. Ten minutes after this draw, 2 late entries showed up, and this brought the number of entries to 14. The original draw was abandoned and the tournament will now be run as a 7 round Swiss.

Ten of the players were active club members from last year (the ones with hyperlinks in the table below), and hence need little introduction. The 4 new players are:

1. Ray Adams, who is of course not new to the club at all. He last competed in the Flood Cup in 1990. Last year he was a member, but could not commit to our tournaments. Ray has a current ACF rating of 1604 and will challenge all in games played over the slow time controls of the Flood Cup.

2. Tony Howes, who has not played competitive chess for over 20 years. He had a rating back then of 1501 (now 1651 thanks to inactivity!), but has been given a provisional 1400 rating for the purposes of the round one Swiss draw.

3. Debbie Jenkins has long played internet chess, but is now seeking to test her skills over the board. She has already achieved some good results at the Brisbane Chess Club this year. Given a provisional rating of 1150 for the purposes of the draw (which may totally insufficient).

4. Mike Talbot started coming along to the club late last year, and has added a measure of character to the place. This will be his first chess tournament, and he has been given a provisional rating of 700.

Game 7 was played tonight, as Mike will be away NZ for 3 weeks. Mike had problems with the notation, and Gabby’s assistance in this regard helped Gabby to drop a knight in the opening. Mike played extremely well considering it was his first game, but Gabby’s experience told in the end with a comfortable win.

Lightning Tournament

Only one game played tonight. This result means that Andrew will claim the Lightning crown if he can claim a win in just one of his four games against Paul next week. Gabby bemoaned his poor form in these blitz games – he examined the crosstable and couldn’t believe it was so. Gabby was club lightning champion in 2000 against a strong field, but said he was now strictly focused on the longer form of the game.
