One Hour Tournament 2002

Result – Maiden Trophy play-off:

Michael Hussey 1 Peter Hiller 0

Michael Hussey won the Maiden Trophy after a torrid struggle with Peter Hiller. After the opening Michael had developed a slight initiative. Then Peter hit back and was a pawn up with initiative at a stage when both players had 15 minutes left. Michael retrieved the pawn with the rook exchange at f4, but then pieces were exchanged leading to a rook endgame in which Peter had the marauding rook, while Michael's rook was defending pawns. Through the tense final half hour of the game Michael managed his time better and still had over six minutes left when Peter had less than two minutes. Peter asked the DOP about the rules as he was a pawn up in a rook ending but in dire time trouble. He was informed he could make a draw claim if he wished, but must make the claim with time on his clock. Peter did not make a claim. The game continued until Peter’s flag fell and Michael claimed a win on time. Both players looked like they had just done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson after the game had finished (except that they had both ears fully intact!).

Allegro Tournament

The most important fixture of the night saw Andrew win 2-0 over Harvey. This means a clean sweep for Andrew in his final fixture against Peter Hiller will see him win the tournament. Paul paralleled Andrew’s performance on the night winning 4 games out of 4. Although on his own account he was fortunate to win the second game against Doug who had him butchered in the opening. Brian won both games against John after John managed to leave pieces en pris. Imitation is the finest form of flattery, so Brian was chuffed! John managed to recover some of his composure to win with white against James. Gabby came unstuck with an unsound sacrifice against Doug in one game, but managed to tie it up on the night. In the final games of the night Harvey was once again struck by the ‘curse of the Hillers’ and dropped a game against Peter.

Quote of the night came from Harvey during a social game with James: “If you at least look at the board you might have some chance”.

Transfer

Only 3 or 4 games were played with the sister combination in action. All went pretty much to script except for one astonishing game in which Paul had castled (?!?) and was then checkmated by rook and queen blunderbuss down the h file….. by James!! Needless to say James was jumping for joy, while Paul looked totally bemused. Indian bookmakers were noted lurking in the corridors.
