George and Gabriel played at Gabby’s residence on Monday 5 August, and this crucial game resulted in a draw. George had sacced a rook on f7 at move 18 to open up the play, but Gabby played safe against this onslaught and a draw was agreed to 8 moves later in a perpetual check situation.

On Friday a full list of 5 games was played (in addition to a forfeited game) with no great upsets. Michael attempted to maintain parity and aim for a draw in his game by exchanging off pieces at every opportunity. Unfortunately for him, positional play resulted in Andrew gaining a rook on the 7th rank and 2 mobile bishops against a rook and 2 knights all pinned to the back row.

Two games were decided by phenomenal blunders which produced instant resignations. Brian and Stuart were the culprits (again!), although both were in slightly inferior positions at the times of their respective disasters. James tried to outdo them however by invoking a disaster at every move. His opponent described this game as “James’ worst game of the year”, although there were strong argument put forward by others in favour of his Flood Cup encounter with George…

John Curran played well against George. As late as move 44 he had a chance to force a draw – after the game the various sages of the club concluded that Bxc6 with the resultant queen for white a move earlier than black would force a draw.

Selected games from the One Hour tournament will be published each week.
