Many suggested that the amazing run of Brian Willcock in the early rounds of this tournament was a fluke. Brian did his best to prove them right. In the following miniature Brian castles queenside to achieve a kingside iniative. But then, as one of the jokers at the club mentioned, he seemed to run out of suicide bombers! We will leave readers to come to their own judgment from the following miniature……

Harvey Quaresmini (1417) - Brian Willcock (1320)

1 e4 e5, 2 Nf3 d6, 3 Bc4 Be7, 4 0-0 Bg4, 5 d3 Nc6, 6 c3 h5, 7 h3 Qd7 (BW intended Bxh3 but then forgot about it and moved his Q), 8 hxg4 0-0-0, 9 Ng5 Rf8, 10 gxh5 Nf6, 11 Bxf7 Rxh5, 12 Be6 Rfh8, 13 Bxd7+ Kxd7, 14 Nh3, Rh6, 15 Bxh6 gxh6 black resigns 1-0

The long awaited Round 7 clash between Stuart Wilson and James Hiller has finally occurred. Despite James withdrawing from the tournament, the game went ahead to see if James could break his 15 game losing streak. Alas it was not to be, and this was not helped by a free knight sacrifice at move 4. Stuart played his customary stonewall, and then proceeded to overuse his queen. One felt that if James had managed to trap the white queen the story may have finished differently…. (but then again!…)

Stuart Wilson (1099) – James Hiller (unrated)

1 d4 d5, 2 e3 Nh6, 3 f4 Ng4, 4 Bd3 e6, 5 Qxg4 Nc6, 6 c3 e5, 7 Qg3 exf4, 8 Qxf4 Bd6, 9 Qf3 0-0, 10 Qh5 g6, 11 Qxd5 Qe8, 12 Nf3 Be6, 13 Qg5 f6, 14 Qh6 Qf7, 15 0-0 Qg7, 16 Qh4 Rfe8, 17 Nd2 g5, 18 Qe1 Qh6, 19 Ne4 Rad8, 20 Ng3 Bxg3, 21 Qxg3 g4, 22 e4 Qg7, 23 Nh4 Na, 24 Bf4 c6, 25 Bc7 Rc8, 26 Bxa5 b6, 27 Bb4 c5, 28 dxc5 bxc5, 29 Bxc5 Rxc5, 30 Qd6 Rb5, 31 Qc6 Qd7, Bxb5 Qxc6, 33 Bxc6 Rd8, 34 Rxf6 Bc4, 35 Nf5 Rb8, 36 b4 black resigns 1-0
